4 Mistakes Homeowners Make When Installing Shelves

DIY Shelf Installation Mistakes

Most homeowners think installing shelves is a quick job. It definitely can be, but it can also quickly become complicated if you don’t make the proper preparations. The flooring and design experts at CMA Flooring in Carrollton recommend avoiding these 4 common mistakes during your shelf installation project.

1. Not Using a Level

It might be tempting to just eyeball where to place the shelf brackets. However, neglecting to use a spirit level can actually create problems later when your books are sliding onto the floor due to a crooked shelf. Establish a level edge, then draw a penciled line as a guide.

2. Skimping on Screws and Brackets

It’s common for homeowners to deem the number of screws they receive with their shelf unnecessary, and they end up only using a few of them. This decision means you’re likely to hear your shelves crashing to the floor at the some point. The manufacturers provide a specific amount of hardware for a reason, so make sure you use most, if not all of your screws and brackets.

3. Putting the Shelf in a Bad Location

Homeowners often place a shelf on a certain location on their wall, only to realize later the shelf is close to falling off. Make sure you screw the shelf into at least one stud inside the wall to keep it secure. Also, install shelves close to electrical outlets or light fixtures. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself straining your eyes next time you need a book or are trying to read a label.

4. Not Planning Ahead

Home design experts highly recommend planning your shelf installation ahead of time. Know where the studs in your walls are. If you need to install the shelves in a place where there aren’t any studs, you’ll need a different way to secure them, like self-tapping bolts or molly bolts. In any case, make these preparations beforehand.

As a design consultant, I spend a lot of time guiding clients through the finishing touches that make their remodels feel both beautiful and lasting. More often than not, I recommend a look that’s soft, timeless, and effortlessly elegant. That look now has a name: the cashmere kitchen — and it’s still going strong. So, what is a cashmere kitchen ? Think of it like your favorite cashmere sweater: soft, classic, comfortable, and a little bit luxurious — without being flashy. Some designers even call it a soft neutral kitchen or a timeless kitchen. The idea is the same: subtle luxury that feels as good as it looks. Key Elements of a Cashmere Kitchen Cabinets : Warm neutrals such as soft greige (J&K Pebble) paired with a warm wood accent like J&K Butterscotch. Countertops : White quartz with gentle gold and brown veining for a polished yet understated look. Hardware : Champagne bronze for subtle warmth; matte black for contrast on darker cabinets. Floors : Light, natural hardwood like Regal Alton to keep the space airy. Backsplash : Glossy, handmade-look tile (SOHO Surfaces) that adds texture and visual interest. Overall feel : Everything flows together. No harsh contrasts — just understated details that shine. This is what makes the cashmere kitchen such a perfect example of a comfort luxe kitchen : elegant, but inviting. Why Homeowners Love a Cashmere Kitchen A cashmere kitchen design checks a lot of boxes for today’s homeowners: Timeless appeal – Won’t feel dated in a few years. Easy to personalize – Add your own touch with lighting, décor, or barstools. Resale - friendly – Neutral palettes appeal to a wide audience. Relaxing atmosphere – The mood is calm, cozy, and inviting. It’s the perfect balance of modern and classic — Shaker cabinet doors provide tradition, quartz countertops keep it current, and metallic hardware adds polish. Many homeowners see it as a classic warm neutral kitchen because it feels both stylish and practical. Cashmere Kitchen vs. Transitional Kitchen
